Private Investigation Services

To become a private investigator, you need to first find out what the requirements for private eyes are in your state.  The only states that do not have license requirements are Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Mississippi, Missouri, and South Dakota.  Even though there is not a private eye license requirement, there may be a business license requirement that will need to be fulfilled.  For every state, there is an agency or association that you should contact for more information.

Private investigator agencies vary by state.  It is best to contact an agency where the largest portion of any investigation will be conducted.  To find a local detective agency, you should search the yellow pages or a private eye list directory.  The Private Investigator Association of your state could also give you information on any private investigator around.

There is a Private Investigator Association for almost every state in the United States.  It is a non-profit association consisting of licensed private investigators, investigative assistants, expert eyewitnesses and associate members.  It was founded in 1995 by a group of licensed investigators that wanted to foster professionalism and ethics into the private investigation industry.  There is a link on the Private Investigators Association of America`s webpage to the Private Investigator Association of each state.

There are a few private investigator schools.  There is the Detective Training Institute, which has been named the 'Official PI Academy.'  There are also some online schools and programs to help you in your pursuit of becoming a private investigator.  The curriculum usually consists of investigation courses, business courses, computer and hi-tech courses, and ethics.
